Using Pictures
This page may be a varying degrees of help. Depending
on what scanner you are using, the software loaded onto your
computer, and the individual setup, directions may vary. We will try
to give some general directions to scanning. This particular example
is using a UMAX scanner and VistaScan
software.
Pre-Scanning:
- Place your picture onto the glass on the
scanner, face down, aligned straight.
- Locate and open the scanning software, ie:
VistaScan, it might be through PhotoDeluxe. Using
VistaScan, you will see a screen similar to the one
below.
The first step is to get your image onto the
screen;
Click on the "Preview" or "Pre Scan"
button to get your picture on the screen. The picture has not yet
been scanned. It is simply on your screen so that you can make the
desired selections before actually scanning it.
Scanning:
- Use the cross hairs to draw a dotted lined box
selecting the area you wish to scan, cropping out the unwanted
area.
- Choose the dpi (dots per inch) resolution. If
you are going to use the picture on the web 72 dpi is fine. If
your going to be printing the picture, you might want to select a
higher dpi.
- Select the color you wish to scan depending on
your original and your desired outcome., ie: color, gray, line
art.
- Select your size percentage.
- You can choose to lighten or darken or change
the contrast of your picture.
- Once all selections have been made, Click on
the "Scan" button and your picture will be
scanned.
- At the save dialog box, you need to give your
picture a name, decide where to save it, and for "File
Format" choose "Pict" instead of "Tiff."
- Then click "Scan"
- When finished, click on "Cancel" and
quit out of the program.

Once
Scanned:
You can insert the picture into Word
or into a website.
