Importing Graphics

Four basic ways to retrieve graphics and import them into your page:

From within Word/PowerPoint/Excel Clip Art Library:

  1. With Word/PowerPoint;
  2. Go to "Insert" > "Picture" > "Clip Art."
  3. Select the graphic you want (note; they are by catagories), then click on "Insert."
  4. Place and resize the graphic on your page. (note: holding down the shift key while resizing keeps graphic proportional)
  5. Most likey you will want to Text Wrap your graphic. To do so, click on your graphic to select it.
  6. In the Formatting Paleltte; choose "Wrapping" and instead of "In line with Text," select; "Tight" or "Square." - and your text will wrap around your graphic no matter where you place it.

From External Source:

You can also insert graphics from external sources either by dragging them onto your document or going to "Insert" > "Picture" > "From File" and find the graphic you have saved on your computer. Then continue just as described above.

External sources can include; graphics from the internet (though be careful of copy right laws), clip art CD's, scanned images, digital photos, etc

Using Graphics

Text Wrap:

Once you have imported your graphic, you may want to wrap your text around it.

  1. In the Formatting Paleltte; choose "Wrapping" and instead of "In line with Text," select; "Tight" or "Square." - and your text will wrap around your graphic no matter where you place it.
  2. Adjust as appropriate.

Resizing Graphics:

Once your graphic is imported onto your page, you can move it or resize it according to your needs.

  1. To move it: Choose your "pointer or selection tool" and click on the graphic to select it (it is selected when you see the four "handles" in the corners) Just drag it where you want it.
  2. To resize it: Select it and drag one of the four handles until it is the size you wish.
  3. Tip: To keep the graphic the same proportion as you resize it - hold down the shift key as your drag the handles.

Understanding Layers:

Graphics and text can be layered (to put text on top of a graphic, etc.)

  1. Click on a graphic to select it, then with the "Drawing Tools" out ("View" > "Toolbars" > "Drawing") Select the "Blue A" and choose "Arrange." You can now move it forward or backward to achieve the effect you wish. Click here for more information.
