Thumbnail Pictures

If you have a page with many pictures, especially if they are large pictures, it could take the viewer along time to download your page. This can cause frustration. A simple solution to this is to make thumbnail images of your pictures on your main page. Thumbnail images are small versions of a image (which don't take up much room and download fast) which are linked to pages with the full size image. Any image a viewer wants to see, they can simple click on it and view it full size. See example. That is what we are going to do here.

Getting Started:

  1. Create a new folder and name it "thumbnails"
  2. Create your "image" folder inside of this folder.
  3. Open Claris HomePage and save first page as "index.htm"
  4. Make 12 new pages, saving them as: picture1, picture2, etc
  5. Now you need to find 12 pictures of your choice. (make sure they are school appropriate!) The pictures should all be related in some kind of a theme. You can download them off the internet into your image folder.
  6. Place the 12 full size images onto your picture pages 1-12 with a title, background, explaination, etc.

Making Thumbnails:

  1. Using Graphic Converter, scale each picture small (maybe 10 % if it is a large picture). It should be no bigger than about 1 1/2 inches square (you want all your thumbnails to be about the same size). Save them in your images folder as thumb1, thumb2, etc. You might also convert them to jpegs at the same time.
  2. Back on your "index" page, create a table with 3 row and 4 columns. Leave the border showing.
  3. Place a thumb image in each cell (make sure to center it in the cell)
  4. Click on each thumbnail to select, go to the "Link Editor" and find the page with the corresponding full size picture. Do this for each thumbnail.
  5. Type the title of each thumbnail below each image.
  6. Make a direction at the bottom of the index page about clicking on image to view full size.
  7. You should have a "back" link on each of the 12 pages.
