Geology of the Grand Canyon:

Obtain worksheet from teacher. Go to above site and read and answer questions

Metric Conversion

Open the "Metric Conversion Online" spreadsheet in the "shared documents" folder. Save it in your own folder as: "Metric Conversion."

Convert each number to the other units on the line (except for those cells that are greyed out.

Make sure to write the units after the numbers.

  2. Do the convertions to Kelvin.

Erosion and the Colorado River :

  1. Read through website about the Colorado River and erosion.
  2. You will probably need to do some additional research at other sites using Google.
  3. Using Word, write a summary about what you learned, 2 pages.

Hoover Dam Research report:

Using the internet, research the Hoover Dam and write a report on your findings. Make sure to include history, how it changed the environment of the area, the difficulties involved in building such a structure, the purpose it used for, etc.

Structure of Earth model:

Using AppleWorks draw, recreate the "Structure of Earth" model on pages 138-139 (red book) including explaination of each component.

Seismic wave model:

Using AppleWorks draw, recreate the "Seismic Wave" model, figure 6 on page 142 (red book) including explaination of each component.

Shear and Compression waves:

As #5 and our conclusion on your Investigation 2, part B - Click on the above Link, read through it, make sure to do the animations for Microsoft Explorer and see both the longitudinal and transverse wave animation. Then write on your lab write-up a conclusion of what you have learned and include drawing of each type of wave. (minimum of 6-7 complete senetences).

Savage Earth

Work through this entire website. (this will take you awhile). Write a two page report on why you think earthquakes and volcanos occur and anything else you learned at this site.

Quake Model -

Using AppleWorks paint or draw program, draw and label the diagram on page 168-169 in the red book.

Earthquake map:

Using AppleWorks Paint program, get a map of the USA (from the clip art library). Then color it in according to the map on page 175 red book. Remember to make your color legend.

Earthquake Chart:

Using the earthquake data on page 42 (white book), create an Excel spreadsheet using "Region, Magnitude, and Depth" as your column headings. Then make a bar chart showing your data.

Volcanos; PowerPoint:

Using PowerPoint, create a report about "Volcanos." Use information learned and researched from chapter 8 in the red book as well as websites. Your presentation should probably cover such things as:

  • Types of volcanoes
  • Types of eruptions
  • Effects of volcanoes on land, environment, people (good and bad)
  • Relationship between volcanoes, earthquakes, mountains, and tectonic plates.
  • How volcanoes are formed, how they erupt

You need to download pictures from the internet. (minimum of 10 slides). Use contrasting colors for text and background, do not make it distracting, Make it easy to read. The title and the picture should be stationary on the slide (not flying in), the bullets should fly or dissolve in but not behind or in front of a pictures. No sound. - Design it as if you were going to present it to an audiance.

Go to both sections; "Becoming a Meteorolgist " and "Meteorologst." Then using Word, write a report on what it takes to become and be a meteorologist. Save as; Meteorologist.

Scientific Method report: After reading this entire article, use Word to write a report on the scientific method. Save as; "sci method."

  1. Read through the steps of an Archaelogist.
  2. Look at the contents and clues of of the different bags
  3. Take notes.
  4. Open and Save Word and save as "Archaelogist."
  5. Explain which bags of artifacts you believe came from each of the different layers of the wall. Explain your answers. color code your responses to match the colors of the 5 bags.
  6. Then, on the same file; Explain what it would be like to be an Archaelogist. Review the process you read about and incorporate those things into your essay.

Go down to "Fossils" and work through all activities.

When finished, write an essay about what you have learned about fossils.

Natural Wonders of the World Field Trip:

  2. Read through the sections looking at many of the natural wonders of the world.
  3. Using Word, write a summary about at least 5 of the natural wonders, 2 pages minimum.

3 energy transfer - Inspiration:

Using Inspiration, create a diagram showing the 3 types of energy transfer we have been learning about;

Energy Transfer is your main topic

Conduction, Convection, and Radiation are your main sub topics

You should have info from each of those explaining; how energy is transfered, and examples of each. Information can be found on pages 221-223 in red book.
