Computer Literacy:

We are in the age of Information and Technology. To be successful in this age, you need to develop good computer skills with ability to find information. The amount of information in this world is growing by leaps and bounds. Successful people we be those that know how to find and access that information.

About the Class:

In this class, we will be covering the following:

Keyboarding Word Processing (Word) Spreadsheets (Excel) Database
Drawing Tools (DTP) Presentation Software (PowerPoint) Internet Skills Computer Theory

The fundemental part of using a computer is Keyboarding. You have to be able to communicate with your computer, and you do this by learning good keyboarding skills (ie; typing using all the correct fingers, without looking). We expect every student to develop good keyboarding skills in this class. This skill will help you for the rest of your life. We will spend the first 3-4 weeks developing our keyboarding skills, then continue to work on them as a warm up for the rest of the year. Your keyboarding grade will be based on you finger technique and effort, not your speed or accuracy.

Word processing programs are probably the most widely used programs on the computer. We use word processing programs to type thing, usually in paragraph form such as reports, and letters. Word processors have the ability to allow you to edit your work, (which means to correct, change and alter). The word processor we use in this class is Microsoft Word.

Spreadsheet are a great tool for organizing information in neat rows and colunms. You can also use mathematica formulas to have the computer do calculations for you and even convert your information into pie charts and graphs. The spreadsheet program we us is called Excel.

A database is a program to help you store, manage, and sort information or data. We use AppleWorks database. Plus we will use online databases to help us do research.

A program widely used to present information to groups of people is PowerPoint. We will learn how to make computer presentations using PowerPoint.

The internet is valueble tool. We will learn about the internet and how to do good internet searches which will help you to find the information you need. All students will need access to the internet with a signed parent permission form turned in (these were in your first week of school packet of materials). Proper and safe use of the internet is manditory.

Appropriate Use:

Appropriate use of the internet and the computers is manditory. Any mis use or mis-treatment of the computer will result in student being taken off the equipment, possibly permenently. Never give out or try to get past a password protected area.

Proceedures:

Every file or document you create and save must be named correctly; with your intials at the begining and then the name of the assignment.

Every paper you turn in must have a heading on it. First and Last Name, and period.

You need to get into the habit of saving your work often, (like every 5-10 minutes) so that you don't lose your work if something happens to the computer (which it will at some point).

You may only print if your teacher instructs you to.

Grading:

You are trying to earn as many points as you can. Your grade is based on the percentage of point you earned. The grading scale is:

A
90-100%

B

80-89%
C
70-79%
D
60-69%
F
below 60

Following the many directions is very important in getting a good grade. Make sure to listen, watch, and read to get all the directions and instructions. When periodic progress grade reports are sent home, they must be signed and returned.

Rules:

  1. Treat computer properly and with respect at all time.
  2. No food, or drink (including gum) is allowed in the computer lab. (water bottles must remain in the backpack)
  3. You need to be on time and in your seat will the bell rings.
  4. When the teacher is talking, your full attention needs to on him.
  5. Keep your hands to yourself (following this rule will keep you out of trouble at school probably more than anything else)
  6. At the end of the period, save your work, log all of the way out, and be in your seat.
  7. The bell doesn't dismiss you, the teacher does. Stay seated until dismissed.
