Reading and Writing Strategies
With nonfiction we will study organizing thinking, making inferences, and determining importance. We will work together to organize our paragraphs using a writing method, which includes topic sentence, concrete detail, commentary, and a concluding sentence.
As we work with poetry we will learn poetic devices, work in literature circles, discuss importance and meaning,, and practice questioning as we read. We will read and write different types of poetry.
When we read realistic fiction, we will access prior knowledge to better understand the novels, practice inference to appreciate the author's viewpoint, and determine importance to better remember important details. We will write personal essays to express connections to our reading.
