Mrs. Moxley's Readers'/Writers' Workshop
Standards for Reading
1. Word analysis, fluency and vocabulary development
Students will study words in the literature and in the Wordskills book. They will study words in context and use the dictionary. They will learn to pronounce, spell, and understand many new words to use in reading, writing , and speaking.
2. Reading Comprehension
We will read a number of novels, stories, and poems as a class, in small groups, and independently. We will also supplement that reading with specialized programs including independent reading, timed readings, and internet sites.
3. Literary Response and Analysis
Our class will read from a variety of genres and understand the qualities of each. We will discuss and write about characters, setting, plot, tone, theme, and point of view. Students will critique novels pertaining to realistic, style, and author's technique.
Writing Standards
1. Organization and focus
We will use the Jane Schafer method to learn to write topic sentences and organize writing to follow a well crafted thesis statement. Students will write letters, poems, reports, expository essays, and responses to literature.
2. Research and Technology
All students have computer access. Each student has a password and a file in which to store their research and writing.
3. Evaluation and Revision
Students will read each other's work, have teacher correction, and revise their own work. Every student will select their best work to be kept in their portfolio. They will present their work aloud to their teachers and peers.
Social Studies Analysis Skills
1. Chronological and Spatial Thinking
Students will be using and making timelines and graphic organizers to better understand the information we are studying.
2. Research, Evidence and Point of View
Students will study evidence and research and form questions. They will draw conclusions from the evidence. They will determine the point of view of the research and evidence.
3. Historical Interpretation
Students will determine the main point and the important facts. They will examine evidence in order to recognize pattern, relationship, and relevance.
Students will consider economic and political situations in various ancient cultures.
