Stacy Quesada's Pre-Algebra Course Syllabus

Classroom Procedures and Rules for 2006-2007

In the Pre-Algebra course, students will explore a broad range of topics, including number concepts, computation, estimation, functions algebra, statistics, probability, geometry, and measurement. Students who master these topics will be prepared to learn Algebra next year. Students will work individually and in groups, using the Prentice-Hall Pre-Algebra textbook along with the Accelerated Math computer program.

State of California Math Standards:
  • Number Sense
  • Algebra and Functions
  • Measurement and Geometry
  • Statistics, Data Analysis, and Probability
  • Mathematical Reasoning

Assignments are given daily! Work is due the next day in order to receive full credit for an assignment. Work may be turned in during the week for half credit. The student will not receive credit for work more than one week late. If the student is absent, he/she will have one day for each day that he/she was absent to make up assigned work. It is the student's responsibility to inquire about missed work.
Two standards-based Portfolio Writing Assignments will be given during the school year.

  • No credit for DISHONESTY on any assignment or test. DO YOUR OWN WORK.

 Homework: Students are required to finish the "in class" assignment at home if not completed during classwork time and work on their Accelerated Math practice each night. Students should have this worksheet in their binder at all times. Parents may check the date on the top of the practice to monitor when it was printed.

Extra Credit: Students may exceed expected level of mastery on Accelerated Math (10% counts toward grade) and enrichment worksheets may be available occasionally.

Grading:

25% Classwork

25% Chapter Tests/Projects

20% Accelerated math

20% Homework

10% Quizzes

Grading Scale:

A+ 97-100       B+ 87-89       C+ 77-79        D+ 67-69      Below F
A 94-96         B 84-86         C 74-76         D 64-66
A- 90-93        B- 80-83        C- 70-73        D-55-63

 Citizenship Grade: Each student starts with a new 100 points for each 6 week grading period. Students lose points by: arriving tardy, losing scan card or practice sheet (10 points); not having a binder, losing AC worksheet or other assignments, not having paper or pencil; eating in class; getting out of seat for inappropriate reasons; reading/writing notes in class; excessive talking; not working on assignments; sleeping or laying head down; vandalizing school property; violating Lewis Dress Code; noise making; and all other disruptive behaviors (5 points). Students must complete assignments 90% of the time and have good attendence to receive an "E" in citizenship.

Citizenship Points:

E= 91-100 points

G=81-90 points

S=71-80 points

Progress Reports are sent home with students approximately every 3 weeks and require parent signature. Credit for completing an assignment will be given when the report is returned.

Accelerated Math is an individualized program where students practice on objectives that match the lesson material. When students have correctly answered 4 out of the 5 practice questions, AM will include the objective on a test. By correctly completing 3 out of 4 problems on the test, the student receives credit for mastering the objective. Students are expected to master 3-4 objectives to master 3-4 objectives each week as posted on the board in the classwork.

Additional math help: References for private tutors are available upon request. Students may ask the teacher for a special worksheet called an "exercise" from the AM program to take tutoring sessions.
