Mark Nelson-Trip Coordinator mnelson@sandi.net
This is Mr. Nelson’s fifth year on the East Coast Trip and fourth year as trip coordinator. He has taught 8th grade United States History at Lewis Middle School for the last four years and is beginning his fifth. In addition to organizing the East Coast Trip, Mr. Nelson also serves on the Lewis Leadership Team, chairs the history department, and helps run Junior Model United Nations. Throughout the year, he will help with organizing different events, communicate with students and parents, and work with the tour director (Kim Jessop from World Expeditions) to finalize the trip procedures. Mr. Nelson is also nicknamed “The Eliminator” as he removes students from the trip not meeting the requirements!!
Kim Jessop - World Expeditions tour director kim.worldex@cox.net
Kim is the tour Director for World Expeditions and began her Educational Tour experience as a parent chaperone, fund-raiser, and site tour coordinator in 1995. After several years assisting Steve Ewalt, owner of World Expeditions, both on tour and in the office, Kim was given full responsibility for her own tours in 1999. She has since led small tours of 24 to three bus tours of 160 travelers. She brings enthusiasm, energy, and organization to her tours and her unique perspective as parent chaperone and tour leader help as she deals with all aspects of the tour from sign up to our return to Lindberg field. Kim feels a big part of her job is exposing students to travel in hopes that they will grow into curious, flexible, and confident travelers.
Nadia Enrile
This is Miss Enrile's second year on the East Coast trip and she is extremely excited! Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, this is her third year at Lewis as a Resource Specialist. She loves working in education and is continuing with her own education to pursue a Master's Degree in counseling. She enjoys exploring and learning about the specific landmarks and history of the country with the Lewis staff and 8th grade students while on the trip.
Michael Lewis
Michael Lewis is a fourth year teacher at Lewis, from Portland, OR. This will be his second time on the East Coast Trip, and he's excited about seeing Philadelphia for the first time, as well as revisiting Boston, NY, and DC. Last year he was fortunate enough to sit front and center for Phantom of the Opera, and plans on lucking out again 'on broadway' this year.
Joni Kunzler
Joni Kunzler is starting her third year at Lewis. This will be her second trip with the east coast crew! However, she was in charge of "expeditions" at Roosevelt for sixteen years, the last several years with Ms. Keitel who is now at Lewis also. Ms. Kunzler has been a teacher in the district for thirty-three years and YES that makes her the oldest living chaperone in the world! She loves teaching at Lewis, thoroughly enjoys her students, and can't wait to spend time with them on this once in a lifetime learning excursion.
Cyndy Young
Cyndy Young is taking her second trip with Mr. Nelson’s east
coast crew. However, she has been involved in east coast trips previously
both at Lewis and Pacific Beach Middle. This is her fifteenth year
teaching math at Lewis. Yes, many humiliating algebraic age problems
can be contrived from this data. You may notice she is not confessing
to the number of years she’s been with the district. This trip
will be the highlight of our students’ career at Lewis; she
is honored to have the opportunity to be with them on this life experience.
Steven Santana
This is Mr. Santana's first year at Lewis and first year going on the East Coast trip. He has been teaching 8th graders Algebra for the last 5 years and has always been jealous when his students would leave for the East Coast trip. He is excited for the opportunity to share such a wonderful experience with his students. He really looks forward to spending time in Boston and Philadelphia, two places he has never been to before but always wanted to travel to. He hopes to bring back many memories that will never be forgotten.
John Steinemann
Laura Newman
This is Laura Newman’s second year teaching eighth grade English at Lewis and her first year chaperoning the trip to the right coast. As a former Lewis student herself, Ms. Newman is excited to have the opportunity to travel on the East Coast Trip…an opportunity that she didn’t take advantage of as a student! Ms. Newman can’t believe how fortunate she is to be able to fuse her two favorite things, traveling and education, into one unforgettable experience
Sara Wildman
Sara Wildman is in her second year at Lewis Middle School. She is the resource specialist for 8th grade. Last year she worked with the 7th graders and was able to move up with those students. This is her first time going on the East Coast Trip, but not the first time back East. She loves to work with all our students, and is looking forward to her first experience in Washington, D.C.!
Patty Keitel
Patty Keitel has been a middle school English teacher for twenty years. Previously, she taught at Roosevelt Middle school, where she chaperoned student trips for eight year along with, Ms. Kunzler, who taught her everything about student travel. She was also their trip coordinator for the past three years. This is her first year at Lewis, where she teaches eighth grade. She loves the history and atmosphere, of the East Coast and looks forward to sharing this experience with the students at Lewis.
