NON-FICTION
During the course of each semester, students are asked to read a nonfiction book based on one of the units studied in class. The purpose for reading the book is to challenge levels of thinking and reading, as well as enhancing levels of knowledge and understanding. Each book must be a minimum of 250 pages (or approved by teacher), and is worth 10% of their grade. Non-fiction texts can be found in our library or the San Diego Public Library. However, it is recommended for students to purchase a book from Barnes and Noble, Borders, or Amazon.com. It is important that students build their personal libraries and have their own books so they can mark the text. Topics can range from a specific battle to biographies of people in history. Students must have this book at all times and it may be read during KBAR!

INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOKS
All of the work completed in this class will be kept in an interactive notebook. This is an effective tool to help students organize their work, understand the flow of concepts in United States history, and prepare for major projects and tests. Any assignment that is handed out in class such as a map, matrix, or graphic organizer will be taped into the notebook. Assignments such as class notes, quick writes, reflections, commentary, or response to text activities will be completed in the notebook as well. Every assignment will appear in a table of contents at the front of the notebook. The notebooks will be graded once a month. Each assignment completed receives an individual grade. The notebook grade is a compilation of the individual assignments. Tests, major projects, and research papers will be graded separately from the notebook.

GRADING
Grading is weighted by three categories

A) Writing Assignments/Quizzes (30%)
B) Interactive Notebooks (35%)
C) Tests and Major Projects (35%)
D) Non-Fiction (10%)

Scale
A 100%-90%
B 80%-89%
C 70%-79%
F 69% and below

ABSENCES
Each student gets one day to make up missed work for each day absent. However, make-up work is graded every Monday for the week before the last, and students failing to turn in make-up work on time receive a “0.” All the class handouts will be on the front table to the right of the overhead. Students need to find the handouts they missed, ask other students how to complete the assignment, and turn it in to the proper period baskets on the the shelves by the door. It is the students responsibility to get any missed spiral notebook assignments as well. All assignments will be posted on the board. LATE WORK IS NOT ACCEPTED!!

DISCIPLINE POLICIES
Discipline procedures will vary, depending on the behavior, but for the most part, students will receive a warning. If the problem persists, the student will be sent out of the class or to a "buddy" room. After having a conference with the student once he/she has been removed and there is still a problem, the parent/guardian will receive a phone call.
