Frequently Asked Questions

What is Lewis Middle School?

Welcome to Harvey Lewis Middle School! We are located in the Allied Gardens, Del Cerro area. We serve Grade 6-8 students from our local community and from other areas of San Diego. Our school has a strong focus on academics that has helped all students to improve their learning, particularly in literacy and math. Lewis leads in technology instruction in most cases incorporates technology for research, communication, and assessment. Our mission is to provide a rigorous core instruction that also includes a broad range of electives in music, the arts, technology, and foreign language. In 2001, Lewis was recognized as a California Distinguished School for our safe, challenging, and innovative learning environment. Lewis teachers are dedicated to improving instructional practices that will lead to higher student achievement. Our students, parents, and staff are to be commended for improving our Academic Performance Index ranking to a score of 9 (on a scale of 10)! In two years, our API scores have grown dramatically, with most of the gains coming from our African American and Hispanic populations. Our emphasis on literacy and math is helping us to close the gap in our subgroups. More effort is still needed to raise the achievement of our second-language students. We need to refine our instructional strategies to improve all our students achievement in math and reading.
