Science Notebook
What is the Science Notebook? Just as professional scientists keep a record of all of their work, you will keep a notebook of all the work you have done for this class. It will contain handouts from class, journal entries, activities, questions and reflections, graphs, etc. Some homework will be graded separately, while some homework will be graded as a part of the notebook. The semester notebook is very important! It is worth about 40% of your grade . Neatness and organization will be rewarded!
Do I need a special notebook? Yes, you will need a 3-ring binder (1 inch) that is only for science work.
How often will it be collected? Notebooks will be graded several times throughout the semester. Sometimes students will receive advance warning of upcoming checks, but there will also be spot checks. Therefore, the notebooks are expected to be complete and the table of contents updated daily.
What is the format?
The first page will have your name, period, and a creative piece (drawing, poem, etc.) that relates to this class.
The second page will be your Table of Contents. Make 2 columns. One will be "Items", give each a specific title, such as "Scientific Investigation". Another will say "Page Number". You will be recording daily the items and marking the page number in the appropriate column. The assignments will have page numbers in the upper and outer corner (left side – upper left corner, right side – upper right corner). Both the front and back of pages will be numbered.
Next will be the Science Syllabus
Next will be the Science Notebook handout (this page)
For the remainder of the notebook you will put journals, additional handouts, questions you have, concept maps, brainstorms journal entries, activities, questions and reflections, graphs, etc.
What will help keep the notebook looking neat and organized? Because it is expected that you will treat all of your assignments with pride, your science notebook should look neat and organized. First, the 3-ring notebook will be in good condition, free of writing on the outside and all three rings functional. Second, papers need to be in all three rings. If the hole rips, you may put the assignment in a plastic sleeve or simply use a hole re-enforcer sticker. Sometimes pages rip accidentally, so you will need to fix them with tape. Assignments also need to be clearly titled and have page numbers. All the assignments need to be included in the Table of Contents.
*** Neatness and organization will be rewarded! ***
