Welcome to Lewis Middle School Room 503!
Dear parents and students,
It is my hope that this syllabus will answer questions that you may have regarding
the classes that I teach. I will be glad to answer any you have. Feel free to
phone or e-mail me.
Materials: Students are required to come prepared for learning every day. The
basic supplies needed each day are:
Notebook or Binder with subject dividers
Two pencils or pens
Notebook paper- College or wide rule three hole type
Textbooks- These are checked out to students and are to be brought to class every
day. Please keep covered and in good condition.
Calendars: In order to keep up with class and homework assignments students are
required to keep daily assignment calendars. These are provided to every Lewis
student at no cost. Assignments are posted daily. Occasional rewards are given
for parent signatures on calendars and other documents requiring signatures.
Classroom rules:
My rules are general and cover many situations.
1. Follow directions the first time.
2. Come prepared to learn.
3. Use class time appropriately.
4. Be in your seat before the bell rings.
5. Respect the rights of others.
Consequences:
1. Friendly reminder.
2. Classroom detention.
3. Detention and home contact.
4. Repeated - Referral/ home contact/ conference.
5. Severe- Go directly to the principal.
These rules and common sense will help create a learning atmosphere.
Social Studies: Ancient Civilizations are the topic of 6th grade social studies.
The textbook Ancient World, (McGraw Hill) will be used. We will focus on such
ancient civilizations as Egypt, Rome and Greece as set out by the district standards
listed below.
Homework: Homework is sometimes assigned Monday through Thursday. Students are
also expected to complete any unfinished class work at home.
CONTENT STANDARD 6.1
The student describes what is known through archaeological studies of the early
physical and cultural development of humankind, from the Paleolithic Era to the
agricultural revolution, with emphasis on the defining role of physical geography.
CONTENT STANDARD 6.2
The student analyzes the major characteristics of early civilizations in Mesopotamia,
Egypt, and Kush.
CONTENT STANDARD 6.3
The student analyzes the history, central beliefs, and ethics of the ancient Hebrews.
CONTENT STANDARD 6.4
Students describe the emergence of ancient Greek civilization from the rise of
Athens through the early Hellenistic period.
CONTENT STANDARD 6.5

and the lasting contributions of Indian civilization.
CONTENT STANDARD 6.6

CONTENT STANDARD 6.7
The students analyzes the development of the Roman Republic, the spread of the
Roman Empire, and the legacy of Rome.
Grading and Citizenship: A weighted grading system is used for each of the core
classes that will go generally as follows;
Classwork 50%
Tests 40%
Homework 10%
Late work Policy: One day late - no more than a “C” grade.
After that a “0” no credit is given.
This policy was established to stress the importance of the student’s responsibility
to meet deadlines and due dates.
Each student begins the year with a G (good) in citizenship, with the possibility
to earn an E (excellent). These grades are influenced by behavior and apparent
effort, as determined by the student’s willingness to :
1. Abide by classroom and school rules.
2. Attend and be involved in class activities.
3. Regularly complete assignments.
4. Demonstrate a positive attitude toward learning.
5. Act in a mature and responsible manner.
Please note that academic and citizenship grades go hand in hand. For example,
a student’s regular failure to complete and turn in assignments will likely
earn an N (needs improvement), or a U (unsatisfactory) in citizenship. Likewise,
those demonstrating a positive attitude toward learning are more likely to earn
A’s and B’s.
