Membership:
Chapters in over 18,000 secondary schools (middle schools and high schools), both public and private, are members of NHS and NJHS.
Criteria:
Members are chosen for outstanding performance in Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character (with Citizenship added for NJHS membership). Selection of members is run through the local chapter at the school.
The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is governed by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The NJHS is open to all sixth, seventh and eight graders who have met five criteria: scholarship, leadership, service, character, and citizenship. To be eligible for membership the candidate must be at least in second semester sixth grade, seventh grade, or eighth grade. Candidates must have been in attendance at the school the equivalent of one semester. The Lewis NJHS minimum standard for scholarship shall be a cumulative scholastic average of at least 3.5 with no Ds or Fs. The minimum standard or citizenship shall be an average of 3.0 with no Us or Ss or Ns. Grades used are semester grades only, not progress reports. Candidates shall be evaluated on the basis of service, leadership, character, and citizenship. Ten hours of advisory board approved community service is also required to attain membership, and then 10 hours for each subsequent year of membership.
Application Process and Rubric - As membership candidate of the NJHS you have met the academic and citizenship grade requirements. Another aspect of being a member in NJHS is demonstrating solid leadership qualities.
Please respond to the following question in 200 words or less: Describe anexperience in your life that you feel demonstrated your leadership and character qualities. How did that experience build your character and make you into a leader? What hardships did you have to overcome? How did it make you stronger as an individual?
Each year the National Junior Honor Society requires that each member completes one or more community service projects in which a minimum of ten hours is offered. This service could be oriented toward improving student leadership, educating them as citizens, working with, and learning about senior citizens, providing some learning about other cultures, or performing some school service. This approach emphasizes the need for cooperative effort in service to the community while providing an opportunity for individuals to discover and develop their own unique contributions. Membership in the National Junior Honor Society will be earned by the effective demonstration of the four qualities held in high esteem by the society.
** The basic scholarship requirement is a cumulative average of 3.5 or above on semester report cards. Students must also display a 3.5 or above average for citizenship grades.
